Gascon Appointments Spark Fierce Public Outcry and Scrutiny in DA Office

An appointment by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon is receiving considerable pushback. Gascon recently appointed Tiffiny Blacknell, a former public defender known for her outspoken opinions on policing and criminal justice, as his new chief of staff.

Blacknell, formerly a grade four prosecutor and chief of communications in the district attorney’s office, was elevated to the role of Chief of Staff. Her promotion was announced on Friday, December 15. She is set to assume her new duties starting January 16.The announcement of her promotion has sparked significant backlash, particularly due to her controversial statements during the protests following George Floyd’s death. She labeled the Los Angeles Police Department as “barbarians” and “an occupying army,” and was vocal in her support for the defunding of the police.
