Victims Speak Out: LaWanda Hawkins

LaWanda Hawkins is a mother whose only child, Reggie was tragically murdered in 1995. Reggie was killed alone at the San Pedro waterfront by what is believed to be random gang violence. Reggie’s killers are still free, and his case remains one of 50,000 murders unsolved since 1980. LaWanda states, “We’re still looking for leads. We’re looking for LAPD to solve his case, like so many others.”

Hawkins heroically founded “Justice for Murdered Children,” a group advocating for victims’ families, to ensure those killed in unsolved murders will be remembered, and their killers will be brought to justice.

LaWanda discloses, “After I lost my son, I became involved in the community helping other families whose loved ones were murdered. Most of the families that I help are from marginalized communities and most murder victims are black or Hispanic teenage boys or young men. Since George Gascon was elected District Attorney, I hear from family after family how he has abandoned them. How Gascon won’t try 17-year-old gang murderers as adults… and how Gascon wants to give plea bargains to murderers?”

L.A. County D.A. Gascon and his failed policies ignore victims and their families. They instead offer violent criminals light sentences. He has numerous pro-criminal blanket policies including what he calls “de-carceration” – with his intention to NOT prosecute criminals to the full extent of the law – and to NOT have certain violent criminals serve their full sentences and let them back out into our community quicker.

LaWanda reveals what Gascon thinks of victims, “The families that have been impacted by murder want justice and they want their communities to be safe. I have invited Gascon to meet with murder victim families on many occasions to hear our concerns about his policies. He has ignored my requests and refuses to meet with victims. We need a D.A. who cares about victims,” LaWanda implores. “We need a DA that cares about keeping our children safe. Vote for Nathan Hochman! Gascon must go!”
