Victims Speak Out: Donna Hill & Lodie Pollard
Donna Hill’s son, De’Vaughn, and Lodie Pollard’s son, Michael Pollard, were burned and murdered in the Studio City Music Fire in April 2018.
Donna describes, “The man who took my son’s life deliberately set the fire knowing my son was in the building. The murderer blocked the door where my son was, so he had no way to escape.”
Lodie explains, “The defendant was mad at Michael and his friend De’Vaughn, so he set an arson fire inside the building, blocking my son in a room where he died in the fire.”
Our L.A. County District Attorney, George Gascon, and his failed policies ignore victims and their families, and instead offer violent criminals light sentences.
Lodie reveals, “Before Gascon took office, the DA’s office was prosecuting the case with the Special Circumstance of ‘multiple murders’ – which meant the defendant would be in prison for the rest of his life.”
Gascon’s refusal to use sentencing “enhancements” and “Special Circumstances” that should have been used for De’Vaughn and Michael’s killer, have turned into a second victimization of victims’ families.
Donna affirms, “Gascon failed me and my family because he gave the defendant a plea deal. It was a slap in our faces. The evidence was very strong. Yet Gascon felt it necessary to remove the Special Circumstance charges from our case and offer the defendant the equivalent of “20-years-to-Life” for his despicable act. This means I will have to go through agonizing parole hearings trying to keep him in prison.” Because Gascon now forbids prosecutors from attending Parole Hearings to support victims’ families.
Lodie is outraged, “20 years for deliberately murdering 2 people isn’t fair and is not justice for my son Michael.” Donna was disrespected, “I called Gascon and requested to meet with him. He has never returned my calls or met with me. Gascon spit in my face and rewarded the offender. He cares more about criminals than he does victims.”
