Victim Stories: LASD Deputies Jack Williams and Bobby Esquivel

Gascon attempts to reverse conviction of cop killer

On May 29, 1979, defendant Jesse Gonzalez shot and killed Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams and shot at Deputy Bobby Esquivel as they were serving a search warrant in La Puente. A jury convicted the defendant of murdering Deputy Williams with Special Circumstances and attempted murder of Deputy Esquivel, both with use of a gun. The case was back in court on a defense motion asking the court to reverse the conviction. After years and several courts upholding the guilty verdict, Gascon attempted to concede the defense motion which would have resulted in the conviction being reversed. Thankfully the judge recognized there was no legal justification to overturn the conviction and the defendant’s conviction and sentence stand.
